5 Extra Years – What would you do?

What would you do with 5 extra years? Invent something, spend more time with loved ones, cross more adventures off of your bucket list? How would you spend your time? Who would you inspire? Where would you go?  A fellow blogger Rundmach recently wrote about this video. The video is striking. It really made me reflect about my own children, the neighborhood children, and the all the children I’ve ever met as a school based OT.  What would they do with 5 more years? What could they do?

I urge you to take just a few minutes of your time and watch this video from designedtomove.org

Our bodies are created to be able to do great things.  I once went to a therapy workshop where the speaker was discussing sensory processing and the vestibular sense (our inner sense that responds to gravity that is the foundation for balance, coordination and fluid movement). She talked about our body and how it was designed to move.  She felt that our bodies are made up of 3 inverted triangles, one stacked on top of the other (sorry I can’t get the images to touch below).

triangleHead and Neck

triangleShoulders and Trunk

trianglePelvis, Legs, and Feet

Now inverted triangles stacked one on top of another are not made for stability, they can not be static. So if that analogy is true, then we should be constantly moving just by anatomy alone.  I can’t say that I disagree with this thought.  Without movement, the body begins to deteriorate…we are designed to be dynamic.

I think the impact of our increasingly sedentary lifestyles is continuously getting scarier.  Children have to sit for longer stretches in school, there is more work in front of the computer and less out in nature. There is less recess time, minimal playground equipment to explore, more TV, more video games, more texting, more iPads, more fatigue from working so hard… so this is the call to action.  Just start. One foot in front of the other. Do what your body was designed to do:  get up, get outside, move, change, grow, find courage, be your best you…We are losing time, our children are losing years and we are charged with being the best role models for them – we have to show them, we have to do it with them. We have to keep moving forward.

So, what would you do with 5 extra years?

Go get it.
